Samsung and SK Telecom partner to build a 5G-capable 8K TV
The race to develop the world's first 8K TV with 5G speeds is heating up. Samsung announced today that it is partnering with SK Telecom to develop and commercialize the world's first 8K-5G TV. The end product would be a TV with an ultra-high resolution screen that is also capable of extremely fast connection speeds, enabling users to download VR and other data-heavy content.
What's next for fitness wearables?
At IFA this year, we've seen devices, like Withings' Move ECG and ASUS' VivoWatch SP, that bring more ECGs to more people -- technology that first appeared in mainstream wearables with Apple's Watch Series 4. I've been thinking about the future of wearables, and it increasingly looks like we're at the final frontier of what fitness wearables can do. Five years from the announcement of the first Apple Watch, and it looks like, soon, there's not going to be much to distinguish one wearable from another.
Companies distanced themselves from foldable phone hype at IFA
Samsung may finally be ready to launch the Galaxy Fold, but other smartphone makers seem to be collectively experiencing commitment phobia. At IFA 2019, companies like Huawei, LG and TCL cooled their efforts on the foldable flagship race in various different ways. While Samsung saw IFA as the venue to show the world how it's attempted to mitigate the problems with a folding screen, most other players are sitting out the hype.
Samsung confirms when you can buy Galaxy Tab S6, Watch Active2 and more
Samsung announced a bunch of new products over the summer, including the Galaxy Tab S6 and the second iteration of its Galaxy Watch Active. Now we know when to expect them, and how much they'll cost.
Vulnerability lets text messages steal emails from Android phones
Bogus text messages aren't just being used to send you to malicious websites or crash your phone -- in some cases, they can hijack your emails. Check Point Research has discovered a vulnerability in phones from Huawei, LG, Samsung and Sony that lets attackers use custom SMS to intercept all email traffic on target devices. The attack uses the common Open Mobile Alliance version of over-the-air provisioning, a carrier technique for deploying settings to new phones, to access emails. The attacks require different methods depending on the phone and available info (such as IMSI numbers and requesting PIN codes), but the result is the same: intruders trick users into compromising their phones through messages that pose as network settings changes.
Samsung cancels Galaxy Fold pre-orders to 'rethink' the experience
Samsung may be on the cusp of launching the updated Galaxy Fold, but that isn't stopping the company from making last-minute changes to its launch plans. As YouTubers, writers and others have discovered first-hand, Samsung is cancelling all Galaxy Fold pre-orders from its online store in order to "rethink the entire customer experience," ranging from the actual purchase through to after-sale support. This includes the just-announced Premier Service that gives foldable phone buyers around-the-clock direct access to experts.
Samsung’s Galaxy A90 5G might make you forget about the Galaxy S10 5G
Samsung isn't just launching 5G devices at the upper echelons of its product line, because not all of us can afford a flagship. The Galaxy A90 5G is the company's first 5G handset for those folks who aren't willing, or able, to blow upward of a grand on their phone. And, at first blush, it looks like the sort of smartphone that's so good that you might completely forget it's not a high-end, look-at-me flagship.
Samsung's reinforced Galaxy Fold feels stronger than before
At last, Samsung is ready to unveil the refined Galaxy Fold. After an embarrassing initial rollout earlier this year that was plagued with multiple damaged review units, the company was forced to delay launching its foldable flagship. It went back to the engineering room to figure out how to make the handset more durable, and seems to have sorted out its issues, announcing in July that the Fold would be available in September. Well, here we are now in September at IFA 2019, and Samsung has finally given us our first hands-on with the redesigned device.
Live from Samsung's IFA 2019 press event!
Samsung already revealed the Galaxy Note 10 a few weeks ago, but the company is still hosting a press conference here in Berlin for IFA 2019. Between then and now, the Korean giant has announced the Galaxy A90 5G, brought HDR10+ to 8K TVs and shown off the Exynos 980 CPU and Modem. We'll be there live and expect more info on the return of the Galaxy Fold to be the major news of the day. Of course, it's Samsung, so you never know what other surprises may be in store.
Samsung Galaxy Fold launches in Europe on September 18th
After its first attempt at a launch fizzled out in the spring, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is ready to try again at making a first impression. As promised, it's ready for launch now and is available starting September 6th in South Korea. At IFA 2019 in Germany, Samsung also revealed that the device will hit France, Germany, the UK and Singapore on September 18th. In Korea, only the Galaxy Fold 5G 512GB model is available, with carriers like SK Telecom and LG U+ opening pre-sales today before devices are delivered Friday. For reasons yet unknown, the Fold will be 5G-ready only "in select markets," while others will only have an LTE-compatible version to snap open and closed. The price is 2,398,000 won, or about $2,000 US, and there's a Fold Advantage+ program that promises to cover 70 percent of display repair costs, once a year. In March there were rumors of a program to offer screen replacements if a visible seam forms across the display, and it appears that the Advantage+ program is what Samsung has decided to go with. An announcement for the US reveals we can expect the device "in the coming weeks" in two colors -- Cosmos Black and Space Silver -- but doesn't mention anything about 5G or screen replacements. What it does give additional info on, however, is the addition of a new Galaxy Fold Premier Service it's launching along with the phone. In a move that might help justify its nearly-$2,000 retail price, the Premiere Service adds 24/7 direct access to Samsung experts for "tailored guidance and support over the phone." They can even help you set it up for the first time with a one-on-one session designed to highlight its special capabilities.
Samsung's Exynos 980 chip is a processor and 5G modem in one
Samsung has announced the launch of the Exynos 980, the company's first mobile processor which combines a 5G modem and mobile application processor in a single chip. Until now, phones with Exynos have needed a second chip for 5G -- putting everything in one allows for more compact phone designs and better battery life.
Samsung brings its HDR10+ tech to 8K TVs
Samsung has announced that it will support 8K HDR10+ streaming, meaning 8K movies and other content will have richer colors and deeper blacks on 8K TVs. It said that three European OTT streaming services, Chili, The Explorers and Megogo, will adopt 8K HDR10+ to go along with their 4K HDR10+ content. This is a mostly symbolic announcement for now, as none of those services offer 8K streaming of any kind right now and hardly anyone owns an 8K TV.
Samsung's next foldable phone reportedly tucks into a square
Samsung still hasn't shipped the Galaxy Fold, but it apparently has a follow-up in the pipeline. Bloomberg sources claim the tech firm is developing a phone with a 6.7-inch screen that folds into a square much like a classic clamshell phone. It wouldn't just spark nostalgia for flip phones, either. The company reportedly wants this device to be thinner and more affordable than the $1,980 Fold, and is said to be partnering with designer Thom Brown on a look that would appeal to those interested in "fashion, status and luxury." It won't be that inexpensive, then.
Samsung's Galaxy A90 5G delivers specs and super-fast connectivity
Being expensive, finicky and hard to find, 5G is still the ultimate early adopter tech. Now, Samsung has brought that incredible speed potential within reach by launching the Galaxy A90 5G. Unlike models including the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G or OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, it's one of the few non-flagship 5G phones available, so it might be actually hit a reasonable price point.
You can once again pre-register to buy the Samsung Galaxy Fold
After a more than five-month delay, it looks like Samsung, true to its word, is on track to launch the Galaxy Fold this September. As of Monday, the company is once again allowing consumers in the US to pre-register to purchase its first foldable smartphone. The fact Samsung is allowing individuals to pre-register to buy the Fold suggests we'll see the phone finally make its way to consumers sometime later this month.
Samsung's first mid-tier 5G phone emerges in leak
The 5G phones on the market have usually been on the pricey side, including Samsung's. You'll spend a pretty penny if you want a Galaxy S10+ 5G or Note 10+ 5G in your pocket. You might not have to shell out quite so much going forward. Well-known leaker Evan Blass has obtained a deluge of videos and animations that appear to show the Galaxy A90 5G, Samsung's first mid-range device to use next-gen wireless. The design isn't shocking -- surprise, it's an A-series phone with a teardrop display notch and triple rear cameras. However, it's notable that the device would even exist in the first place when 5G is generally limited to flagship hardware.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 review: The right size at the wrong price
For the first time since launching the Galaxy Note, Samsung has made two sizes of its flagship big-phone. The Note 10+ is a powerhouse, but frankly, I find the smaller Note 10 more intriguing. It has a slightly smaller screen than the Note 9, squeezed into a body that's about the same size as the S10. Yes, it does have a 6.3-inch screen. But it's shoved inside a handset that's ever so slightly larger than an iPhone XS, which has only a 5.8-inch display. This offers a way for people to get the series' hallmark S Pen in something a little less cumbersome than the typically oversized Note.
8K Association lays out 'key performance attributes' for 8K TVs
More manufacturers are selling 8K TVs or have models going on sale soon, and ahead of the IFA 2019 tradeshow an industry group has released its "performance specification" for consumer TVs. The 8K Association includes members like Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Panasonic, Intel, Hisense and TCL.
Experts share their (mostly) hassle-free security tips
It seems like every day another big corporation discloses a breach. Equifax, Capital One, Marriott, and a whole host of other companies have leaked the personal data of millions of their customers. That pilfered information could be used to steal identities or hack into other accounts. This sobering reality is a reminder that more than ever, we should secure our accounts and take control of our data. You probably can't stop hackers from breaking into a hotel chain, but you can put up roadblocks to stop them from infiltrating your life.
Samsung is testing its Galaxy Home Mini speaker in South Korea
Samsung hasn't even released the original Galaxy Home over a year after its reveal, but that isn't stopping the company from offering a peek at a follow-up speaker. The company has confirmed the existence of the Galaxy Home Mini by accepting sign-ups for a public beta testing program in South Korea. Residents with Samsung phones can apply by September 1st to try a tiny version of the Bixby speaker, which matches the earlier FCC filing to a tee -- it's an AKG-tuned audio bowl with some basic controls on top.
