The legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype is up for auction
For years it was the stuff of legend -- a games console that incorporated both a CD drive and SNES cartridge slot made with the official backing of PlayStation and Nintendo? But back in 2015 we saw the magical prototype for ourselves and even had a play with it. Now, after years of touring the world to show off the system to classic gaming fans, the owner of what is believed to be the only remaining Nintendo PlayStation system is putting the console up for sale.
Sony's DualShock 4 attachment adds customizable buttons around back
Sony is getting into the controller customization game late into the PS4's lifespan. The company has unveiled a DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment that, as the name implies, lets you map two of the gamepad's buttons to easier-to-reach locations on the back. If you'd rather not lift your fingers to reload or perform a special attack, you don't have to. You can specify up to three different profiles, and an OLED screen on the back illustrates your current button setup.
'Final Fantasy 7 Remake' will be a PlayStation exclusive until 2021
There was little doubt that Final Fantasy VII Remake would be a premier PlayStation title, but it's now clear just how long everyone else will have to wait to play it. Deal-finder Wario64 has discovered box art showing that the reborn RPG will be a PlayStation exclusive until March 3rd, 2021 -- a year after its planned release date. Xbox and PC fans will just have to settle for older (or really, newer) Final Fantasy titles until that point, although the timing suggests VII Remake for other platforms is more a matter of "when" rather than "if."
'Untitled Goose Game' comes to PS4 and Xbox One next week
The honkin' good Untitled Goose Game is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on December 17th. The internet fell in love with the title -- which lets you steal things and generally cause havoc as a super-crafty goose -- when it launched on PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch earlier this year. It's like a bizarre mix of Hitman and Postman Pat, chock-full of humor and mischievous missions that take place in an otherwise quiet English village. In a blog post, Sony confirmed that the game will cost $14.99 for PS4 owners at launch, down from its usual price of $19.99. Xbox fans, meanwhile, will have the option to play it through Xbox Game Pass.
Watch Sony's State of Play livestream here at 9AM ET
Sony has set its final PlayStation State of Play event of the year for this morning. It'll last for around 20 minutes, and you can expect PS4 and PS VR game reveals, release dates, gameplay footage premieres and updates from PlayStation Worldwide Studios among other news. What this State of Play won't include, however, is anything related to PlayStation 5.
'MLB The Show' will reach non-PlayStation platforms by 2021
MLB: The Show will no longer be a PlayStation exclusive by 2021. The franchise debuted on the PlayStation in the late '90s, and its games were only released for the PS2, the PS3, the PS4 and the Vita over the next two decades. Now, Major League Baseball (MLB), the Major League Baseball Players Association, Sony Interactive Entertainment and San Diego Studio have announced a multi-year extension of their partnership. Further, they've revealed that they're bringing the franchise "to additional console platforms beyond PlayStation platforms as early as 2021."
Take a look inside the original PlayStation on its 25th anniversary
If you're a gamer of a certain age (cough), you're about to feel very old. Sony released the original PlayStation 25 years ago on December 3rd, 1994, and iFixit has marked the occasion by tearing down the very first, Japan-only model that never officially made it to other countries. To say it's a throwback to another era would be an understatement. It's not just the inclusion of now-quaint technology like a CD-only disc drive, a modest 32-bit MIPS CPU (the base PS4 is roughly 50 times faster), an S-Video port and slots for 128KB memory cards -- the post mortem highlights a fundamentally different approach to electronics design.
Get a PS4 Pro and three of its best games for $300 on Amazon
Console deals are everywhere this time of year, but some are better than most. Amazon is offering a PlayStation 4 Pro "Only On PlayStation" bundle with God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man for just $300 on Cyber Monday. That's substantially below the $338 we've seen recently, and certainly better than the one-game bundles. If you're new to the PS4 and want a primer on some of the top-tier games that defined this console generation, it might be hard to do better.
PlayStation discounts include half-price 'Red Dead' and 'Spider-Man'
It's no secret that Black Friday weekend is a good time to score deals in the PlayStation world, and that's truer than ever as the PS4 era draws to a close. To start, the PlayStation Store is offering massive discounts on a slew of PS4 games until December 2nd, including price drops of 50 percent or more on established hits and recent tiles. Red Dead Redemption 2 is down from $60 to $30, while its Ultimate Edition is just $40. Spider-Man has dropped from $40 to $20, and God of War is a mere $10. You can also snag Madden NFL 20's Superstar Edition for $40 (versus the usual $80), and other 2020 EA Sports games have similarly hefty discounts.
Sony patent may show a familiar-looking controller for the PS5
While Sony is still about a year away from releasing its next-generation console, we may have just gotten an early look at the device's new controller. Newly published images by Japan's patent office that were first spotted by VGC may provide some clues as to what to expect from the peripheral.
Sony's PlayStation leadership is changing again
With the PlayStation 5 due next year, PlayStation is no doubt keen to get its ducks in a row. It's seen a number of managerial changes recently, and has now announced two new moves. Hermen Hulst, formerly of studio Guerilla, is now head of worldwide studios, tasked with making sure the PS5 has plenty of first-party blockbuster games on its roster. PlayStation veteran Shuhei Yoshida, meanwhile, takes the helm of a new initiative to encourage more indies to the platform. Hulst co-founded Amsterdam-based Guerilla, best known for the Killzone franchise and Horizon Zero Dawn. Sony acquired Guerilla back in 2005, and since then Hulst has been responsible for driving a number of innovations, including proprietary game engine Decima which has been used to produce a number of titles, among them the upcoming Death Standing. Meanwhile, Yoshida's new role will see him leading a new company initiative designed to support independent developers -- exactly what that looks like isn't clear yet, but Yoshida is well-known in the business for his love of indie games, and Sony could certainly use a boost in this area. Once a staunch backer of independent developers the company's foothold in this market has weakened in recent years -- Yoshida's new position could turn this around.
Sony's PS4 is the second best-selling console of all time
Sony's PlayStation 4 has become the second best-selling console of all time, surpassing the original PlayStation, which sold 102.5 million units. Sony said that it sold 2.8 million PS4s this quarter (including the PS4 Pro), on top of the 100 million mark it hit last quarter. That's down considerably (1.1 million units) from last year, but was enough to push it to 102.8 million, just above the original PS. It's not likely to catch the PS2, however, which sold 155 million units.
Sony could sell off PlayStation Vue to escape the TV streaming game
Seemingly fed with up with losing money on the service, Sony is reportedly attempting to sell PlayStation Vue. Citing "people familiar with the situation," The Information reports the company has enlisted the help of the Bank of America's Merrill Lynch investment group to find a potential buyer for the online cable service. Any sale would include both Sony's tech, as well as PlayStation Vue's subscriber list -- which includes approximately 500,000 households across the US, according to the publication.
The PlayStation 5 officially launches 'holiday 2020'
Sony is offering up more drip-feed details about its next-generation console, but the major points are that, yes, it will be called the PlayStation 5, and you'll have to wait till the end of 2020 to play it. We also got the first new details on new controllers for Sony's next games machine. Think haptics. A few of 'em.
Sony opens up PS4 cross-platform multiplayer access to all developers
The console gaming world could be about to get a lot more open. For a long time, Sony was resistant to let people play PS4 games with their friends on other platforms. It cracked open the door with a cross-play beta for Fortnite a little over a year ago, and now it's allowing all developers to make use of cross-platform capabilities.
Sony puts PlayStation's 'Games of a Generation' on sale
Some of the most notable PlayStation games are available at a decent discount over the next two weeks. Sony has put over a hundred titles on sale as part of its "Games of a Generation" event, with deals that include half off the original price. The company says the sale highlights "the most memorable games to date," such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel's Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, Uncharted the Nathan Drake Collection, Crash Bandicoot, Bloodborne and Skyrim.
The Scuf Vantage 2 is an improved customizable PS4 controller
If you've been holding out on buying a high-end gamepad for your PlayStation 4, controller manufacturer Scuf Gaming has announced a new take on its popular Vantage controller. Like its predecessor, the Vantage 2 is all about customization and giving gamers additional inputs.
Sony slashes PlayStation Now subscription prices worldwide
PlayStation Now is getting a hefty price drop. Today, Sony announced that its video game subscription service will cost $9.99 per month in the US, down from $19.99 per month. A quarterly plan, meanwhile, will set back you $24.99, rather than $44.99, and the 12-month option will be $59.99, instead of $99.99. Similar price cuts are being introduced in Europe, Japan and the UK. Sony, which has offered PlayStation Now subscription plans since 2015, is clearly feeling the heat from some of its publisher and platform rivals. To name but a few, it's competing with Xbox Game Pass, EA Access, Uplay+, Apple Arcade and, starting next month, Google Stadia.
PlayStation studio chairman Shawn Layden is stepping down
One of the most iconic figures in PlayStation's management is stepping down. Sony has announced that Sony Interactive Entertainment's Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden is leaving the gaming division. The tech giant didn't initially say when Layden would leave, who would replace him or provide an explanation for the move. It did wish him the best in "future endeavors," though, suggesting this isn't a retirement.
Tom Holland's 'Uncharted' movie may have found its latest director
The directorial merry-go-round of Sony's long-gestating Uncharted movie has seemingly made another stop, this time to let Travis Knight on to try and finally make the film happen. Deadline reports the director of the well-regarded Kubo and the Two Strings and the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee is in talks with Sony Pictures over the movie, which is set to star Tom Holland.
